What do we mean by Fake Nothing?

| 3 min read

Gemstone fraud is rife. The jewellery market is flooded with synthetics, with glass imitations, with misinformation. It is not a new trend, but it is a trend that is gaining traction every day – unscrupulous salespeople flood the internet with their 'too-good-to-be-true' deals. But even more worryingly, huge corporations are now mass-producing manmade crystals and glamorised glass, misleading consumers with marketing campaigns that give the impression that these manufactured beads sold at astonishing margins are luxurious goods. It is thought that more than 200 million cut glass beads are manufactured every day. They cannot hold the same lasting intrinsic value as a rare genuine gemstone created by Mother Nature.

Wearing a piece of genuine gemstone jewellery is more than ornamental, it seems to connect you to the earth in a way that a manufactured substitute cannot. It is an emotional and spiritual feeling, but at the same time it satisfies an intellectual craving to collect, to explore, and to gaze in wonder at the incredible diversity and unusual and bewildering beauty that the earth itself has to offer. This is why, here at Gemporia, we only sell genuine gemstones, and we do not sell synthetics, glass, plastics or brass.

Most people seem to think that manufactured glass beads and synthetic gemstones are more affordable than genuine gemstones. However, by cutting out the middlemen, Gemporia has been able to narrow the price gap and in some instances, can offer the real deal at completely comparable prices. We source directly from the mines where possible, meaning that we can keep our costs incredibly low. So a genuine gemstone which is sourced from the ground can be cut and polished and set into jewellery, then sold at a similar price to a piece of glass which has been tumbled out of a machine.

Mother Nature didn’t evenly spread her treasures across the globe. She chose inhospitable and remote places, where mining is one of the very few occupations to be had. Many communities around these mines have no other source of income. If you choose to buy genuine gemstones over fakes, you are helping us in our community projects, but you are also collecting rare treasures that have an inherent value, that are fascinating and beautiful, and that you will be able to pass down through the generations.

We don’t think brass and glass have worth in the same way real gems do.
