Uvarovite Garnet Gemstone

This gemstone family was first documented by  Count  Uvarov  (the  president  of  the  St. Petersburg  Academy  for  mineral  collectors),  whom it is named after.

This  rare  group  of  Garnets  is  special  as  they are  restricted  to  just  one  colour:  a  beautiful rich  green,  which  is  derived  from  Chromium.  Uvarovite  Garnets  are  only  found  in  a  few countries, including the famous gem region in the Russian Ural Mountains, Canada and South  Africa.

Unfortunately,  their  crystal  structure  is  such  that they do not grow very big, therefore they  are very rarely faceted into gemstones for use  in jewellery (we have yet to set any at Coloured  Rocks).
