Planet's Corundum Clouds

| 1 min read

Researchers at the University of Warwick (near our studios in the Midlands of the UK) have discovered a planet with clouds made of Rubies and Sapphires. The enormous planet, known as HAT-P-7b, is 1000 light years from Earth and is 40% larger than Jupiter. The planet is very close to its star and locked in place, always facing its sun with the same side. This means that it has a very hot side (at around 1930°C) as well as a much colder side. This makes it very cloudy and windy. Scientists have speculated that it is very likely that these clouds are made of corundum. Sadly, this doesn’t mean the planet is surrounded by a twinkling blanket of gorgeous gemstones. Due to the heat of the planet, they exist in the form of vapor.
