A Mabe Pearl is truly without equal. It is an organic gem type and is a half spherical Pearl which has grown on the inside shell of the oyster or Mollusc (as opposed to the round Pearl which grows in the body of the oyster), thus giving the Pearl a flat side, which is perfect for setting into rings, earrings and bracelets.
Mabe Pearls can be found in a range of beautiful colours from light pink to darker blue shades. The outer layer (nacre) of a Mabe Pearl is often a kaleidoscope of colours, which can be truly breathtaking and is normally responsible for their higher price tags.
The Mabe Pearl first saw popularity at the end of the 19th century and there are many Victorian pieces of jewellery that include them in the design.
