In jewellery, findings refers to certain parts of the jewellery that are created separately from the main piece and often have an element of mechanism in them.
Cufflink arms, clasps on bracelets and necklaces, butterfly earring backs and earring posts are all types of findings.
Most jewellery makers will have a stockpile of these essential findings:
Clasps: Used to close the end of a necklace or bracelet. The most commonly used are lobster clasps, bolt ring clasps and t-bar clasps.
Crimp Beads: Tiny tubes or beads which are attached to the end of a strand of beads with pliers to ensure your design doesn’t unravel.
Earring Findings: The most common being earring posts, butterfly backs, shepherd hooks and chandelier earrings, all of which are essential for earring designs.
Headpins: Small lengths of wire with a disc or ball at the bottom. Often used to attach gemstones to designs, and can even be made into earring findings.
Jump Rings: Rings or links that can attach beads to chains, and clasps or pendants to a piece of jewellery. If a Jump Ring is split like a keyring it is known as a Split Ring.
