Fancy Cut

One of the most skillful art forms on  the planet is the creation of a fancy cut gem.

When the cut of a gem does not fall into one of the main categories such as a brilliant cut, an emerald cut, a cabochon, or princess cut, it is often referred to as a “Fancy Cut”.
Fancy cuts are also known as “Freeform Cuts” and the GIA refer to those that have fewer than six sides when viewed from the top as “Small Freeform” shapes. As you might expect, “Large Freeform” refers to those that have more than six sides. This type of cut is often used to gain a higher yield out of the rough stone. As the skills of lapidarists increase, along with a greater understanding of how certain cuts reflect and refract light in different ways, fancy cuts are becoming more and more popular. Just like playing music or painting, lapidary is a real art form! Just like these other art forms, there are several lapidary artists who are internationally recognised at being masters of the fancy cut; Pavel, Manuj and Glenn are amongst some of the finest talents of this rapidly growing form of art.

Please note that if you are purchasing loose fancy cut gemstones, they are unlikely to fit into standard jewellery designs and if you want to have them set, you will need to find a jeweller that makes pieces by hand.
