4 Easy Ways to Tell if Your Pearl is Real

| 3 min read

The Pearl trend is not just a passing fad, it's a timeless symbol of elegance and sophistication. Whether you've inherited a piece of Pearl jewellery or are considering adding one to your collection, it's crucial to know if what you have is the real deal.

Once a gemstone reserved for the elite, Pearls have become a treasure accessible to all, thanks to the pioneering work of Japanese entrepreneur Mikimoto Kokichi. His groundbreaking Pearl cultivation process has revolutionised the industry, allowing these organic gems to be nurtured in oyster nurseries under human care. At Gemporia, we are proud to offer you only authentic Cultured Pearls.

Cultured Pearl

Natural and Cultured Pearls are rarely perfectly round and have distinct irregularities that distinguish them. Fake Pearls, however, are often purposely created to be identical and can be formed from glass and plastic, giving them a much smoother and uniform finish.

Worried about distinguishing between a real and a fake Pearl? Don’t be! We've got you covered with four straightforward and foolproof ways to determine the authenticity of your gem.

4 WAYS TO TELL IF YOUR PEARL IS REAL

THE TOOTH TEST

Most jewellers will tell you that the simplest way to find out if a Pearl is natural is to rub it against your teeth. Genuine Pearls have a grainy texture, which you would feel under your teeth. If the surface feels smooth, it’s likely to be an imitation.

CHECK ITS WEIGHT

Despite their size, authentic Pearls have a weight to them and are typically heavier than fake ones. So, next time you hold one, pay attention to its weight.

CHECK ITS TEMPERATURE

Many gemstones, including Pearls, are cool to the touch, and their temperature will naturally adjust when held or worn. However, synthetic Pearls tend to stay at one temperature.

GENTLY KNOCK IT AGAINST ANOTHER PEARL

When two or more real Pearls are knocked together, they will make a dull sound. However, Pearl imitations will sound more hollow. If you cannot tell after this, try rubbing them together instead. If they are genuine Pearls, they will create a fine powder, unlike fake Pearls, which won’t.
