7 Simple Ways to Cleanse & Purify Your Crystals

| 5 min read

It’s widely believed that crystals, alongside having remarkable healing properties, can absorb negative energies that surround you. However, this also means that your crystals can get overwhelmed with these energies and must be purified or cleansed every so often.

Just like we need various elements of self-care to keep us balanced and healthy, crystals need regular treatment too – and there are a few ways in which you can do it.

So, here are seven simple ways to cleanse and purify your crystals.

Water can be used to wash crystals

Water is the obvious choice for cleansing your crystals – after all, we use it to cleanse ourselves, too!

However, we must stress that water works best with stones that are polished, and you should never submerge any rough or natural stones. Always be cautious when using water with your crystals; only place one in water if you’re certain it’s safe to do so, and for rough or delicate crystals it’s best to use other methods like smoke, which we’ll talk about later on.

  • Dip the crystals in a bowl of plain water, or hold under running water for a few moments

  • Never use salt water on crystals, as it can weaken the stone and dull its shine

  • If you intend on using crystals in the bath, dedicate a few polished stones like Rose Quartz to use knowing their shine will eventually fade

Sunlight is a renowned crystal cleanser

Sunlight is a renowed crystal cleanser and is extremely powerful – but just like water, it doesn’t work for every type.

Similar to our skin, too much sunlight can cause a crystal to ‘sunburn’, and there are a few which will also fade when left out longer than a few minutes. Clear Quartz can even heat up in direct sunlight and start a fire if it’s left on a flammable material like paper or wood.

Crystals that we would not recommend leaving in sunlight for too long include:

  • Sapphire

  • Citrine

  • Beryl

  • Rose Quartz

  • Ametrine

  • Aquamarine

  • Kunzite

  • Fluorite

  • Smokey Quartz

Once again, we'd always recommend researching your crystal to see if it is safe to leave out in the sun.

The energy of a full moon is said to be able to purify crystals

Because moonlight is so much softer than sunlight, any crystal, rough or polished, can be cleansed under the night sky.

Unsurprisingly, Moonstone is a powerful stone to cleanse by moonlight, and there’s a special nine-day period during the moon’s cycle where the moonlight to cleanse them is at its best: Waxing Gibbous (between a half-moon and full moon), Full Moon and waning Gibbous (rises later at night, when the lit-up part of the moon shrinks from 99.9% to 50.1%).

  • Place your crystals outside on a table or near a window that’s under the moonlight

  • Bathe them under the moonlight for a few hours

  • Ensure your crystals are in a place where they will remain dry

Starlight is claimed to be an effective method for cleansing crystals

When it comes to light cleansing, sunlight and moonlight are the obvious choices. However, the energy from stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies are said to offer hugely powerful crystal cleansing properties.

Naturally, stones closely associated with the night sky such as Moonstone, Meteorite or Moldavite allegedly bring you closer to the cosmos, and cleansing your crystals using celestial energy is a technique that goes hand in hand with guided meditation.

Singing bowls are a popular tool for crystal cleansing

Sound, when created with intention, is said to wash over your crystals and help release old and negative energy.

It's claimed that playing an instrument to your crystals helps to cleanse them, and this can easily be a ritual you can enjoy in the process. Alternatively, you can use sound from a singing bowl, a tuning fork, or a chime - even your own voice chanting a prayer or mantra is said to work just as well.

Burning incense is common for relaxation as well as crystal cleansing

One of the most common and most popular techniques for cleansing crystals is smudging them with smoke from sage, herbs or incense. It's a favoured technique by many, as you can perform it at any time of day in any kind of weather.

However, purifying your crystals with smoke requires a bit of forward planning.

  • Open any windows and use a fireproof container to catch burning ash

  • First, cleanse yourself and the room with the incense before moving on to your crystals

  • To purify the crystal, either move it through the smoke or use a feather, a fan or your hand to direct the smoke towards it

  • Visualise the smoke evaporating any negative energy you want it to release, which sets the intention for your cleansing ritual and states that you want the crystal to be refreshed and ready to work with

Crystals are said to be able to cleanse and charge other crystals

Did you know that crystals are said to be able to cleanse other crystals, and some crystals can allegedly be used specifically for this?

Selenite and Clear Quartz are thought to be self-cleaning, and therefore the most powerful crystals for cleansing. This also means that they never need to be cleansed themselves, and we would recommend starting your crystal collection with them to help refresh your other ones. This is another favoured method, since you don’t need to rely on the weather for optimum cleansing.

To purify your crystals using Clear Quartz or Selenite, simply place them so they’re either right next to or on top of each other. As long as they’re touching in some way, this method is said to work - and you can leave your crystals for as long as you feel is necessary.

Ultimately, any crystal cleansing method you choose should be one that suits your preferences. Try a few out and see what works best for you, and make it special for yourself – it's a ritual, after all. Set your intention with the stones, and enjoy the experience.
