Hong Kong Gem Show

| 2 min read

Gemporia CEO Steve Bennett, Sarah Bennett (Head of Design) and the team visited the world famous Hong Kong Gem Show in September. Find out more about how they got on.

The September Hong Kong show is without doubt the biggest gathering of the gem trade in the world. The show is separated in two. The Gem Show starts a week earlier and is based at a huge exhibition hall near the airport, with the Jewellery Show being hosted a week later right in the heart of the city at the Convention Centre.

The Gem Show this year had over 3,000 exhibition stands that covered an area bigger than about 20 football pitches!

Gemporia is quite unique at these events in that we both buy and sell gemstones and even trade some gem deals without cash changing hands! Whilst most of our actual buying and trading happens outside of exhibitions, it’s a great way to meet up with lots of our good friends from around the world and it also provides us with an opportunity to feel the market.

This year, highlights included some of the finest Colour Change Sapphire I’ve ever seen, a $5 million Emerald necklace, a $1 million Ruby and securing a parcel of the incredibly rare gem, Grandidierite.
