Gemstone Lore: Aquamarine - The Gem of the Sea

| 2 min read

Aquamarine's beautiful clarity and relaxing pale blue hues have made it a popular choice among gem collectors around the world. It evokes the purity of crystal clear waters and the calming power of the sea. Its name is derived from the Latin 'aqua' for 'water' and 'mare' for 'sea'. Unsurprisingly, much of the legend and lore associated with the sea has been attached to the gemstone over the years.

Aquamarine is referenced in Ancient Greek mythology – which says it washed ashore after spilling from the treasure chests of sirens. These mermaid-like creatures were known to seduce and lure sailors to their doom.

Roman philosopher Pliny the Elder wrote, “The lovely Aquamarine, which seems to have come from some mermaid’s treasure house, in the depths of a summer sea, has charms not to be denied”.

Aquamarine Gemstone

According to Roman mythology, Neptune, god of the sea, considered Aquamarine to be sacred, and over the centuries, the gem became known as the 'sailor's gem'. Sailors believed it would keep them safe on their perilous sea voyages, protecting them from sea monsters and sea sickness. The Greeks wore amulets of Aquamarine engraved with their god of the sea, Poseidon.

Many of today's notable jewellers have referenced the deep-rooted nautical heritage of the gem. In 1893, Tiffany & Co designed the ring shown below, featuring mermaids holding an Aquamarine gemstone. The gemstone was etched with a compass and nautical bell. In addition to its nautical connection, Aquamarine is said to re-awaken love in married couples. The belief that it ensures a long and happy marriage makes it the perfect 19th anniversary gift. Whether buying for yourself or a friend, Aquamarine has a long history filled with protection and love.
