What Are The Different Types Of Earrings

| 3 min read

Earrings have been worn for many thousands of years, which has given designers plenty of time to perfect a wide assortment of shapes, and an incredible array of creative styles!

As they’re so universally loved across genders, it’s only fair that earring makers craft options to suit all tastes and preferences; and that match all outfits! Especially as not everyone wants earrings that sit within their lobes. Piercings in the cartilage, rook, tragus, and across the helix have become popular.

Stud Earrings

These are probably the most versatile and everyday earring, as they can be creative and interchangeable, as well as sitting in a multitude of locations. Studs can be simple metal earrings, gems, Pearls or coloured items, in circular, square or other geometric shapes.

Hoop Earrings

Hoops have not gone out of fashion since ancient times!

One of the joys of hoop earrings is that they can be in a wide range of dimensions – from delicate circles to “parrot perches”. They are also manufactured using various metals, plastic, wood and even bone, decorated with engraving, gems, glass or beads.

Hoops include a “post” to pass through your piercing. Attachment methods tend to be similar to studs. Continuous loop earrings clip into shape once you pass the post through.

Another variation of hoop earrings is huggie earrings. This type of earring is generally metalwork crafted to sit tight around your earlobe or your alternative piercing location. These can be in various shapes, including smaller hoops that lie close to the skin and often employ a clasp fastener.

Drop Earrings

This type of earring tends to be delicate and exquisite, extending just below the piercing. To keep the lovely appearance of drop earrings, they would use a small clutch fastener or butterfly back, similar to a stud.

Dangle Earrings

This term is widely applied to earrings that extend from a simple wire “hook”, and lie counterbalanced just below your ear lobe. They are innovative and even quirky earrings in a wide range of materials, colours and patterns. Though the idea is that the wire holds the earring in place, add a small clutch if your dangle earrings are particularly precious or lightweight.

Some dangle earrings include a clasp on the hook wire, limiting the chance of them falling off.

Tassle and Chandelier Earrings

For colourful and highly decorative earrings, modern-day designers clearly believe “anything goes”. Not only in terms of “glitz”, colour and choice of materials either.

If you want to make a statement with your ear jewellery, how low can you go? The answer is very low, with innovative and eye-catching earrings that reach well past your chin!

Some of these are highly ornate lengthways too, including elaborate chandelier earrings with incredible detail, or structures involving jewels, feathers and weaves.

Having heavy earrings can take its toll on your ear structure, and you may need a sturdy fastener to keep them in place. Some glamorous earrings have a substantial “back” to hold them in place, that’s part of the statement design.

These are the main types of earrings. However, the sky’s the limit in jewellery concepts these days! You can shop our whole range of earrings right here at Gemporia.
