Amami Cut

Deep in the beautiful blue oceans of the islands of Japan, strange and beautiful geometric patterns appear in the sand for all but the most fleeting of moments. The currents then wipe this canvas clean, and the pattern is lost forever. Initially baffled, scientists discovered these patterns were being left by tiny pufferfish who create the design to impress a mate. Inspired by this truly natural pattern, the world's best gemstone cutters have painstakingly recreated it in gemstones. It is known as the Amami Cut and is named after the island where this phenomenon was first observed.
