It is unclear how Topaz was first named. What history is sure about is that the small island in the Red Sea today known as Zabargad, was once named “Topazios”.

Pliny the Elder, the Natural Historian in the first century AD, linked the gem to the island and stated that the islands name was derived from the Greek word "topazos” "to seek".
