Ethiopian Welo Opals are mined at altitude with attitude! At 3,200 metres above sea level, the raw crystals are mined 300 metres below the edge of an exposed cliff face and are all been extracted from the earth by hand. Unfortunately very soon we believe this deposit will be "mined out". In fact we are already seeing a huge drop off in availability of this stunning gemstone.

These Opals posses a fascinating and mesmerising "play of colour".
This discovery at the Wegel Tena mines in the Wollo province was first made in 2008 and that quality of gems uncovered regularly surpasses the quality found in Australia and Brazil.
