Harriet Houston GIA Diamond Grader, PJ Dip

Qualifications

JPDIP 1 and 2, and Diamond Grader with the GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

How long have you been at Gemporia, and how long have you been a presenter?

“About seven years - I started on the Diamond Room, and now for the last six years on the TV.”

What is your earliest Gemporia memory?

“My first memory was my first ever day and being shown around the Museum by Steve Bennett, and feeling so lucky to be around the most beautiful and rare collection of gemstones.

“I had just left working for a big Diamond company, where I looked after their UK accounts and stores in Harrods and Selfridges, so I was used to seeing masterpiece items.

“I was so mesmerised by the Arthur Ivy cabinet - it was like being in Harrods still.”

What is your favourite gemstone and why?

“DIAMONDS - it will always be Diamonds for me. They are as unique as you and I, and they have their own DNA.

“They still amaze me now - that’s why I pursued and achieved becoming a Diamond Grader when I was 19.”

Who do you admire the most and why?

“I admire my dad and husband the most in the world. My family sadly lost my mum to cancer 11 years ago, and my dad was left with three young girls - but he has done an amazing job to survive and raise us all.

“My husband Sam has the most amazing patience and support for me and where life takes me at Gemporia, and I am forever grateful for this. He is a builder and has allowed me to have a space at home for all my Destello work - that’s LOVE.”

What is your favourite place in the world and why?

“Marrakech, Morocco - my favourite place in the entire world. The heat, the people, the food and the architecture - it’s my home from home.”

What are your guilty pleasures?

“I am terrible for loving the Real Housewives series. I have seen them all, and that’s what I do to clear my mind - I just switch off and enjoy.”

What was your dream job growing up?

“A ballerina. I wanted to be on the stage, I was good and got to my examinations on Point - but I knew in my heart of hearts I couldn’t sustain it.”

What advice would you give for choosing a piece of jewellery?

“Go with your gut! I promise you when you see it you will know it’s the one. That’s how many of my purchases happen!”

What quote motto/do you like to live by?

“Forever this quote: ‘Dance like nobody’s watching; love like you’ve never been hurt. Sing like nobody’s listening; live like it’s heaven on earth.’ - Mark Twain.”
